As I watched the Kentucky Derby this past Saturday where jockey Calvin Borel magnificently rode a 50-1 shot to a run- away win I started thinking about history. I am not sure why this came to mind it just did. Can this be the next Seabiscuit I thought to myself.
Lets look back: In 1938 during the Great Depression and the start of World War II the world was changing and people were looking for hope (sound familiar). Americans were doubting the “American Dream”, it didn’t seem possible anymore! That is until Seabiscuit came along and showed everyone that a rage-to-riches story is indeed still possible. I won’t go into the story of this great racehorse, most of you know it but it is widely known that this horse with great disadvantages overcame all obstacles and became a winner. People saw this and thought to themselves, hey if this horse can overcome adversity and become a success then so can I. It gave Americans hope and lifted their spirits. And proved to everyone that you can be a winner no matter what obstacles may be in your way.
So how does this relate to poker you may be wondering. Has George lost it and is just drifting back to his old upbringing and lifestyle having grown up in a horse racing family? maybe! LOL but I see a comparison here to what we do. Every night of the week average people like you and I get to practice a game we love. We get to hang out with our friends at our favorite bar or restaurant, have a few drinks and enjoy some food but most of all we get to play. Every night of the week a tournament is available for us to test and refine our skills. And guess what? we are getting better. Through practice and playing lots of hands and tournaments our players are stepping up their game
“Mind That Bird” was purchased for only $9,500 and ran in the greatest race in the world against other horses that were purchased for millions of dollars. His trainer and owner drove over 20 hours and hauled their own horse to Kentucky while others in the race flew in on private jets and their horses transported in first class. This horse and his team overcame great obstacles and this long-shot, the underdog, this unknown horse came out of nowhere charging down the stretch to win the biggest race of the year!
Will one of us eventually win the greatest tournament in the world? I say it’s possible.
